Effects of elder’s image on successful aging

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of elder’s image on successful aging and the mediating effect of ageism. To investigate the cause and effect of factors, we purposively collected 315 samples from 4 senior welfare centers in Jeonju, Korea and exploited SEM(Structural equation modeling) for 297 cases excluding some cases with missing values. As the results, first, we found the positive elder’s image effected the successful aging. Second, the positive elder’s image also effected the experience of ageism. Third, the increase of ageism experience negatively effected the successful ageing. Fourth, the elder’s image had partially mediating effect of ageism on the successful aging. The study suggested the ageism overlapped with lookism could deepen discrimination against the elderly and consequently influence the successful aging. Therefore we suggested image management programs should be provided to the elderly.
